Jay-Z's first book Decoded has reached number three on the New York Times Bestsellers list.
The rapper's memoir debuted just behind George W. Bush's Decision Points and Laura Hillenbrand'sUnbroken.
"I wanted people to have the proper context of rap, the generation, what we went though, these emotions behind these songs," Jay-Z explained to MTV News.
Decoded contains a collection of lyrics from his songs accompanied by deconstructions by the star and personal photographs.
The memoir marks the second time that Jay-Z has promised to reveal the thought process behind his lyrical content, having previously decided against publishing his first writing project The Black Book.
