Reports suggest the singer would face a sentence of between six months and two years if found guilty of the offence.
Nelson was arrested last week after police officials searched his tour bus and discovered six ounces of cannabis.
Bruce Margolin, from the National Office for the Reformation of Marijuana Laws, told TMZ that Nelson claimed he had been using the drug for medicinal purposes, as it is legal to do so in California where the drug was grown.
