People using 3DSony senior director Mick Hocking has said that 3D gaming is more than just a fad.

Speaking during his keynote at Develop Liverpool, the exec described games as the "3D killer content", and predicted that the technology will stand the test of time.

"3D is here to stay this time. It will be around for a long time," he said. "I think the best news for us in the games industry though, is that games are going to be the 3D killer content.

"We can do more with 3D than just about any other medium because we can interact and innovate with how we use the technology in ways you just can't with other mediums."

Hocking went on to say that the studio is experimenting with holographic 3D - a new technique which creates the illusion of depth by tracking the position of the user's head and altering the image accordingly.

"One technique that we are doing some R and D on our labs in the North-West here is a holographic technique," he added. "We are tracking the position and orientation of the user's head here and altering the 3D relative to that position. It gives you an effect like objects are in the room with you. A pseudo-holographic effect. It's profoundly different from normal 3D."

Earlier this year, Sony introduced a series of firmware updates to bring 3D gaming, Blu-ray playback, photograph and MP4 support to the PS3.
